Sri Lankan-Born Farah Rumy Makes History in Swiss Federal Parliament

Farah Rumy, a 34-year-old Sri Lankan-born politician, has made history by becoming the first person of Sri Lankan origin elected to the Swiss Federal Parliament. Born in Colombo, Rumy moved to Switzerland as a child and went on to build a distinguished career as a nurse, healthcare specialist, teacher, and community leader.

Rumy’s journey into national politics began with her service in the Cantonal Council of Solothurn, where she focused on health policy, social issues, and equal opportunities. Her dedication to public service and expertise in healthcare led to her nomination and election to the National Council, Switzerland’s lower federal house, representing the Social Democratic Party.

In Parliament, Rumy advocates for comprehensive healthcare reform, stronger social safety nets, and inclusive foreign policy. She also plays an active role in labour and migrant advocacy and continues to champion diversity and equal representation in Swiss politics.

Her election marks a significant milestone in Swiss political history, reflecting the increasing diversity of the country’s political landscape and the growing influence of leaders with migrant backgrounds.
