
St. Benedict’s College marked 160 years of La Sallian excellence with its annual prize-giving ceremony, held at the college auditorium. The event was graced by distinguished Old Benedictine, Professor Saminda Prasad Fernando, Professor of Zoology at the Open University of Sri Lanka.
In true Benedictine tradition, the ceremony showcased elegance and discipline as 360 students were honoured with certificates, prizes, gold medals, and scholarships in recognition of their dedication, service, and accomplishments during 2024.
Rev. Bro. Niran Perera, Acting Director of the College, introduced Prof. Fernando as a respected academic admired for his scholarship, ethical leadership, and contributions to society. Addressing the students, Prof. Fernando reflected on the values of faith, hard work, discipline, and teamwork he had embraced as a student and cricketer at St Benedict’s, which guided his journey in life. He reminded students that education extends beyond examinations, it is about cultivating curiosity, compassion, critical thinking, and a spirit of service. He also encouraged them to spend time outdoors, observing how nature enriches learning.
Prof. Fernando paid tribute to his teachers from both primary and upper school, many of whom were present at the event. The Guest of Honour was another distinguished Old Benedictine, Rajive Dissanayake, Executive Vice President of Hatton National Bank PLC.
