Trinity College’s Western Music Society Shines at National Competition

The Western Music Society of Trinity College, Kandy, showcased exceptional talent at the All-Island Western Music and Dance Competition 2025, held in Colombo under the Ministry of Education. The Society earned two National First Places in the Senior Vocal Solo and Junior Piano Solo categories and secured Runners-up positions in both the Junior and Senior Chorale events.

Building on these successes, the Society advanced to the national stage, where their results were equally impressive:

Junior Chorale Performance

After securing first place provincially, the Junior Chorale moved on to the national competition with a dynamic programme featuring “Welcome Sweet Springtime” by Michael Watson and “Cantamos” by James M. DesJardins. The set piece emphasized clarity and vocal balance, while the choice piece brought lively rhythms and expressive contrasts. Their coordination and tonal quality impressed the judges, earning the Runners-up award.

Senior Chorale Performance

The Senior Chorale followed a similar path, advancing to nationals after winning their provincial round. Their repertoire included Disney’s “A Whole New World” and “Time” by Jennifer Lucy Cook, performed entirely a cappella. The group’s precise rhythm, vocal control, and expressive delivery secured them the Runners-up title.

  • Junior Piano Solo: Master Lithum Lokuyaddehige delivered a captivating performance of “Willie Wagglstick’s Walkabout” by Brian Bonsor and “Gavotte” by F.J. Gossec, demonstrating technical skill and versatility across jazz and classical styles.

  • Senior Vocal Solo: Hansana Jayasundara, President of the Society, impressed with “Where’er You Walk” by G.F. Handel and “Con te partirò” by Andrea Bocelli, performing with exceptional control and emotional depth.
