The International Forum for Teachers 2026, the flagship annual event organised by Gateway Graduate School, brought together educators, school leaders and education professionals from national, private and international schools at the BMICH on 25 July 2026.

Held under the theme “From Knowing to Being: Preparing for a World Yet to Be Defined,” the conference explored how education must move beyond the transmission of knowledge to equip learners with the critical thinking, resilience, creativity, judgement and sense of purpose required to navigate a rapidly changing world.

The conference featured a diverse group of speakers drawn from education, technology, leadership, communication, entrepreneurship and professional development. Their varied experiences provided participants with meaningful learning and a wider understanding of the forces shaping education and the future lives of young people.

World Champion of Public Speaking Dananjaya Hettiarachchi presented “Learning to Navigate, Not Just Know,” highlighting the importance of critical thinking, decision-making and the ability to respond confidently in changing circumstances.

Dr. Carl Salt of Flinders University, Australia, addressed “Staying in Charge in a Digital World,” encouraging educators to consider the ethical, responsible and mindful use of technology and artificial intelligence.

Vidusha Nathavitharana and Shaakya Nathavitharana explored “Building Resilience for an Uncertain World,” focusing on adaptability, perseverance, emotional strength and the ability to navigate change.

Penny Butterworth, Regional Professional Development Manager at Oxford University Press and OxfordAQA, presented “Learning to Shape the Future,” examining how educators can foster creativity, innovation, problem-solving and the confidence to create positive change.

A key highlight of IFT 2026 was the launch of Gateway’s partnership with Jolly Learning, UK, internationally known for Jolly Phonics. The partnership will provide educators in Sri Lanka with greater access to recognised early literacy programmes, resources and professional development.

The panel discussion brought together an equally diverse group of professionals: Professor Deborah West of Flinders University; Thilanka Abeywardena of Microsoft; Anudi Gunasekara, Miss Sri Lanka 2024 for Miss World and Founder of the Saheli Foundation; and founder of CelesteJanik Jayasuriya

Drawing on their experiences in education, technology, entrepreneurship, social responsibility, leadership and the arts, the panellists shared valuable perspectives on resilience, recognising opportunities, pursuing one’s chosen path and preparing young people to contribute meaningfully to society.

The diversity of the speakers and panellists was one of the defining strengths of IFT 2026. Participants were able to engage with ideas extending beyond conventional classroom practice and consider education through a wider professional, social and global lens.

The Forum also provided an important platform for educators from national, private and international schools to meet, exchange ideas and learn from one another. Although participants represented different educational environments, they were united by a shared commitment to strengthening teaching and preparing learners for a future that cannot yet be fully predicted.

Feedback received from participants was extremely encouraging. Educators particularly valued the quality and relevance of the presentations, the diversity of perspectives, the practical learning shared and the opportunity to reflect on their own roles in shaping the lives of young people.
