Many Sri Lankan students hold back from going abroad because they think, “My English isn’t strong enough.”
But here’s the truth no one really says out loud: fluency doesn’t create connection, humanity does.
When you volunteer overseas with AIESEC, you’ll quickly learn that a smile, a gesture, and genuine effort can communicate more than perfect English ever will.
You might find yourself teaching children who know just a handful of words, yet somehow forming some of the strongest bonds. You’ll giggle over mispronounced words, use drawings to explain ideas, and celebrate every tiny achievement. That’s the magic of it: it’s never about flawless language, but about showing heart.
One Sri Lankan volunteer shared,
“I was worried about my English, but when I saw how attentively the kids listened to me, I stopped thinking about grammar and started speaking with sincerity.”
And yes, your English will improve without you forcing it. When you’re surrounded by friends from more than 10 countries, you naturally become more confident, more expressive, and more comfortable speaking.
So if language is the fear holding you back, maybe this experience is exactly what you need. Because out there, no one is counting your mistakes, they’re listening to your story.
Bridge cultures, not vocab lists.
