Horizon Campus Student Shines at CleanWAS 2025 International Research Conference

It was a proud moment for Horizon Campus as S. M. Reeshman Shafa, an undergraduate from the Faculty of Science, represented the university at the prestigious CleanWAS 2025 International Research Conference held at the Sunway Resort Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Organized by the Organization for International Water, Air and Soil, the event brought together leading academics and researchers from around the globe.

Reeshman presented her groundbreaking study under the title, “Toxicological Effects of Polystyrene Microplastics on Freshwater Macrophyte Lemna minor and Freshwater Cladoceran Daphnia magna.

Her victory was especially remarkable because, in a prestigious audience of professors, PhD holders, post-doctoral researchers, and postgraduate students, she was the only undergraduate speaker.

Her impactful research was carried out under the expert supervision of:

Dr. Thilomi Samarakoon – Senior Lecturer, Department of Zoology and Environmental Management, University of Kelaniya

Mr. Medhisha Pasan Gunawardena – Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Science, Horizon Campus

Following the conference, Reeshman and Mr. Gunawardena were invited by professors from University of Putra Malaysia (UPM) for an official visit to explore future collaborations in research, training, and workshops.

Professors from the University of Putra Malaysia (UPM) invited Reeshman and Mr. Gunawardena for an official visit after the conference in order to discuss potential future research, training, and workshop cooperation.

This accomplishment not only demonstrates Reeshman’s academic prowess but also reinforces Horizon Campus’ dedication to supporting top-notch research and giving its students access to opportunities around the world.
