Amendments to University Dean Qualification

The Ministry of Education has announced plans to broaden the qualification requirements for appointing university Deans. The Cabinet has approved amendments to the University Act No. 16 of 1978, introducing a merit-based selection process.

According to the Cabinet statement, “These proposed amendments enable to extend the pool of eligible candidates for the posts of Chief Study Administrator of the University system, and provides provisions to strengthen the institutional control.”

The Attorney General has endorsed the revised draft bill prepared by the Legal Draftsman. The proposal was submitted by Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, serving as the Minister of Education. The draft legislation will be published in the government gazette.
