Guardians of the Waters: Unveiling the Future of Kelani River through Groundbreaking Research

The University of Sri Jayewardenepura, in collaboration with Hayleys Fabric, has initiated a comprehensive research project focused on assessing the pollution levels in the Kelani River basin, a significant source of water for a substantial portion of Sri Lanka’s population. This groundbreaking study aims to evaluate antibiotic resistance in the river’s water, which is utilized for human consumption, marking a pivotal step towards enhancing public health and safety measures.

The research encompasses various critical aspects, including the screening and quantification of antibiotic residues in the surface water, identifying antibiotic-resistant bacteria, understanding their resistance mechanisms, and quantifying antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). By examining the correlation between ARGs and antibiotic residues, the study endeavors to provide valuable insights that could guide policymakers and stakeholders in implementing effective strategies for water resource protection and public health safeguarding.

With 27 strategic sample collection points chosen based on a variety of factors such as catchment characteristics, anthropological activities, land use practices, and industrial discharges, the project is poised to deliver comprehensive data on the Kelani River’s condition. This initiative reflects the joint commitment of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura and Hayleys Fabric to address critical environmental issues and develop innovative solutions for the well-being of the community and the environment.

Rohan Goonetilleke, Managing Director of Hayleys Fabric, underscored the importance of this study by highlighting the Kelani River’s role in providing over 80% of the drinking water requirements for the Colombo district. The partnership between academia and industry, as demonstrated by this collaborative effort, exemplifies a proactive approach to tackling environmental challenges and enhancing the quality of life for the Sri Lankan populace.
