Colombo Mayor Vraie Cally Balthazaar has launched a new reading initiative at Sirinivasa, the official mayor’s residence, reviving its historic link to the city’s literary heritage.
Sirinivasa hosted its first “Reading Day” session this week, welcoming children from all 12 preschools run by the Colombo Municipal Council.
The event featured book readings, drawing activities, songs, and playtime, with the Mayor and Deputy Mayor joining in to celebrate the children’s enthusiasm. Mayor Balthazaar described the initiative as a long-term effort aimed at cultivating a love for reading among young learners.
“Many years ago, Sirinivasa was home to the city’s library… So it felt just right to bring a new reading initiative here — one where children from all 12 pre-schools run by the council could come together for a Reading Day,” she said.
Balthazaar thanked the Charity Commissioner, the city librarian, and other supporters for their contributions, including refreshments and books, that helped make the launch a success.
