Scholarships and Fellowships at IISc Bangalore

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore, ranked as India’s top university in the 2024 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, supports its students through various scholarships and fellowships. These financial aid programs help students focus on their studies without worrying about money.

IISc’s Rankings and Achievements

IISc is ranked between 53.7 and 55.7 in the THE World University Rankings 2024.
It also ranks second in India’s National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) for 2024.
In the QS World Rankings 2024, IISc holds the third position among Indian institutions.

Scholarship Programs

IISc offers a wide range of scholarships and fellowships from funding agencies like.

CSIR (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research)
UGC (University Grants Commission)
DBT (Department of Biotechnology)
ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research)
MHRD (Ministry of Education)
AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education)
DAE (Department of Atomic Energy) – NBHM
DST (Department of Science and Technology)

However, these scholarships are not available for students in specific programs such as MSc, MMgt, and some BTech or MTech courses.

Who is Eligible?

  1. MTech, MDes, and MTech (Research) students can get scholarships for up to 2 years.
  2. PhD students can receive fellowships for up to 5 years.

Students in these programs must complete their courses. If they leave early, they must repay the entire scholarship amount.

Who is Not Eligible?

  1. Students in MSc, MMgt, and certain BTech and MTech programs do not receive scholarships from
  2. IISc but can apply for external scholarships.
    Students who are employed or sponsored are also not eligible for these scholarships.
