The Future-Ready Graduate: Choosing the Right Degree in the Age of AI

Artificial intelligence is transforming the workplace. For students choosing a degree today, the real question is no longer which careers will remain untouched by AI, but what kind of graduate will continue to be valuable in an AI-driven world.

If you are sitting for your A/Ls this year, or are a parent helping your child decide what comes next, AI has probably added another question to an already difficult decision:

Will the degree we choose today still lead to a good career four or five years from now?

It is a reasonable concern. AI is already writing software, analyzing data, preparing reports, creating marketing content and helping professionals make decisions. But rather than asking only, “Which jobs will AI take away?”, students and parents should ask a more useful question:

“What kind of graduate will still be valuable in a world where almost everyone has access to AI?”

That is the question that should guide career and university choices today.

AI Is Transforming Work — But Not Simply Eliminating Jobs

AI is undoubtedly changing the world of work, but that does not mean millions of people will simply wake up one morning and find their jobs gone.

The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 projects significant disruption to employment by 2030, with technology, economic and other changes expected to both displace existing roles and create new ones. The important point is that many jobs will not disappear completely; instead, the tasks within those jobs will change.

AI is particularly effective at routine and predictable work. It can summarise documents, analyse large amounts of information, prepare initial drafts, generate computer code and produce standard reports in seconds.

Consider an accountant. AI may process transactions and prepare an initial analysis, but someone still needs to understand what the numbers mean and advise the client.

A software engineer may use AI to generate code, but someone still has to design the system, test it, secure it and determine whether the result is reliable.

Similarly, a marketer can ask AI to produce several advertisements in seconds, but someone still needs to understand the customer, the market, the culture and the overall strategy.

The distinction is important: AI may replace a task long before it replaces an entire profession.

Which Careers Will Be Most Valuable?

Rather than thinking of entire professions as either “safe” or “unsafe”, students should look at the tasks involved in different careers.

Work that is repetitive, predictable and governed by clear rules is generally easier to automate. Careers that involve judgement, responsibility, creativity, relationships, leadership, negotiation and real-world problem-solving are more difficult to automate completely.

Think of a doctor speaking with a worried patient, an engineer deciding whether a design is safe, a manager dealing with a difficult workplace situation, or an entrepreneur deciding whether to invest in a new opportunity.

AI can provide information and recommendations, but someone still has to understand the situation and make the final decision.

For this reason, students should not try to find a career that will somehow remain completely untouched by AI. A stronger strategy is to become highly capable in a chosen field while learning how AI can make you more effective within that field.

The future is unlikely to be simply humans versus AI. It is more likely to be people who know how to work intelligently with AI versus those who do not.

What Does This Mean for Sri Lankan Students?

Sri Lanka will not necessarily experience AI disruption at exactly the same speed as countries with much larger technology-driven economies.

Many areas of employment, particularly those involving agriculture, manual work and physical presence, may not be immediately transformed by generative AI. However, Sri Lankan graduates working in areas such as IT, finance, business services, marketing and other professional sectors may experience these changes much sooner.

One area worth particular attention is the first job a graduate obtains.

Traditionally, a new employee might begin a career by preparing basic reports, conducting research, analysing simple information or completing routine administrative tasks. AI can now perform some of these tasks very quickly.

This means the traditional first step on the career ladder may change.

At the same time, new opportunities are emerging for people who understand AI, data, automation and digital technologies. Sri Lankan students should therefore approach AI with neither panic nor complacency.

For Sri Lanka, AI represents both a challenge and an opportunity.

How Should A/L Students Choose a Degree?

My first advice to an A/L student would be simple:

Do not choose a degree by trying to predict which profession will be completely safe from AI.

There probably is no such profession.

Instead, ask yourself three questions.

First: Can I become genuinely good at this field?

If Computing does not interest you, do not choose it simply because AI is in the news. If you enjoy Business, do not abandon it because someone tells you that AI will replace office jobs.

Your interests, abilities and willingness to work hard still matter enormously. An excellent business graduate, engineer or computing professional is likely to be in a much stronger position than someone who chooses a supposedly “safe” degree but never becomes particularly good at it.

Second: Will my degree teach me how AI is changing my field?

Whatever you study, AI should no longer be something happening somewhere else. It should be part of how you understand your future profession.

Third: Am I developing abilities that AI finds difficult to replace?

Can you communicate? Can you solve problems? Can you work with others? Can you make a sound judgement when there is no perfect answer? Can you adapt when circumstances change?

These abilities will matter enormously.

There is also another reason why subject knowledge remains important. If an AI system gives you a confident but incorrect answer, you need enough knowledge to recognise that it is wrong.

AI makes genuine knowledge more important, not less.

The New Opportunities Created by AI

One of the most exciting aspects of AI is that it is not only changing existing jobs; it is also creating new opportunities. Roles connected to artificial intelligence, machine learning, AI governance, responsible AI, automation, intelligent workflows, data and AI-enabled analysis are becoming increasingly important.

Students should therefore think beyond the question, “Should I study AI?”

A more useful question is:

“What can I combine with AI?”

That could mean Engineering + AI, Business + AI, Finance + AI, Marketing + AI, Logistics + AI or Software + AI.

Imagine someone who understands both finance and AI, or both engineering and intelligent systems, or both marketing and AI-driven customer analytics. These combinations could become extremely valuable.

Some of the jobs today’s students will hold ten years from now may not even have familiar job titles today. Students therefore do not need to predict every job of the future. They need to prepare themselves to move into those opportunities when they emerge.

Human Skills Will Matter More Than Ever

Interestingly, as AI becomes more capable, some very human qualities are becoming more valuable, not less. Communication, judgement, creativity, teamwork, leadership, adaptability and resilience are all increasingly important. Imagine two graduates with the same degree who both know how to use AI. One simply accepts whatever AI produces and waits to be told what to do. The other asks questions, identifies when something does not make sense, communicates ideas clearly, works well with others and is willing to take responsibility for decisions.

Which graduate would an employer prefer?

AI can provide information, ideas and recommendations very quickly. But someone still has to ask:

Is this correct? Does it make sense in this situation? What could go wrong? How do I explain this to another person? Am I prepared to take responsibility for the decision?

That is why these abilities should not simply be dismissed as “soft skills”. In an AI-driven workplace, they may become some of the hardest skills to replace. Students should certainly learn how to use AI. But they should also learn how to think, communicate, question, collaborate and make sound judgements.

What Should Students Look for in a University?

Parents naturally ask about campus facilities, programme duration, fees and employment opportunities. These questions are important, but students and parents should also ask deeper questions.

Where will students actually use AI within their chosen field?

Will students work on real-world problems?

Will they receive practical exposure through projects, internships or interaction with industry?

What will the student actually be able to do after graduation?

A list of subjects tells you what has been taught. It does not necessarily tell you what a graduate can do.

A future-ready education should develop communication, teamwork, leadership and judgement alongside technical and professional knowledge. It should also provide students with qualifications and learning opportunities that can support careers in an increasingly interconnected global economy. A good university education today must do more than teach students what is already known. It should prepare them to solve new problems, work with new technologies and continue learning long after graduation.

Preparing AI-Ready Graduates at SCU

Choosing Your Path with Confidence

There is no single “best” degree for the AI era.

The right choice depends on you — your interests, your abilities and the kind of problems you enjoy solving. If you enjoy computational problems, understanding digital systems and building technology, Computing may be the right path for you.

If you are interested in organisations, markets, entrepreneurship, people and business decisions, Business may suit you better. If you enjoy understanding how things work, designing systems and solving real-world physical problems, Engineering may be your direction. Do not choose simply because your friends are choosing it. Do not choose because someone tells you one profession earns more money. And certainly do not choose a degree simply because you believe AI will make it “safe”.

Choose the field that matches your interests and abilities. Then become exceptionally good at it.

Learn how AI is changing that field. Develop your communication and judgement. Stay curious. Keep learning. Nobody can tell an A/L student today exactly what the workplace of 2035 will look like. But that does not mean we cannot prepare for it. The future will not belong simply to people who know how to use AI. It will belong to people who know when to use it, when to question it, how to combine it with genuine professional knowledge and when human judgement matters more.
