63 Sri Lankan Scientists Among World’s Top 2%, Including 7 from Sri Jayewardenepura University

A global study has recognised 63 Sri Lankan scientists for their outstanding research contributions. Among them, seven researchers from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura (USJ) have earned a place in the world’s top 2% scientists list.

The recognition comes from an updated database titled “Updated Science-Wide Author Databases of Standardized Citation Indicators” published in the Elsevier Data Repository. The study, led by Professor John P. A. Ioannidis from Stanford University, USA, analyses the global scientific impact of researchers across various disciplines.

The assessment covers 22 major scientific fields and 174 subfields, identifying top researchers based on citation impact and career performance.

The seven USJ researchers recognised are:

  • Prof. Meththika Suharshini Vithanage

  • Dr. Anushka Upamali Rajapaksha

  • Dr. Nuwan Gunaratne

  • Dr. K. K. Asanka Sanjeewa

  • Dr. Kasun M. Thambugala

  • Dr. Dimuthu S. Manamgoda

  • Dr. Anusha Hasini Ekanayaka

Four of them represent the Faculty of Applied Sciences, while the others are from the Faculties of Technology, Management Studies and Commerce, and Urban and Aquatic Bioresources.

Vice Chancellor Senior Prof. Pathmalal M. Manage expressed pride in the achievement, saying, “Having seven of our researchers included in the world’s top 2% list is a remarkable accomplishment. It reflects the dedication and excellence of our academic community and strengthens Sri Lanka’s presence in global research.”
