Lathikka Niriella Sri Lanka’s top Quizzer for 2024

Victoria Groce of USA wins the title World Quiz Champion!

Lathikka Niriella re-established his ranking as the best Quiz player in Sri Lanka when he became the top scorer among the 45 Sri Lankan quizzers who competed with the rest of the world in the Annual World Quizzing Championships (WQC), conducted by The International Quizzing Association (IQA) Sri Lanka chapter, at Royal College Union Skills Centre – on Saturday 1 st June.

Last year’s runner up, 43-yeard old Victoria Groce of USA emerged as the World Quiz Champion 2024 by beating Daoud Jackson of England by four points at the WQC 2024, held in over 92 venues in 47 countries June 01st, where 1836 quizzers competed for the coveted title. It is incidentally the first time a female contestant emerged as the World Champion in Quizzing

Rahul Jeyanthan was placed 2nd best in Sri Lanka and Walter Hall was placed third.

Gayani Minuwanpitiya emerged as the top lady-quizzer from Sri Lanka, beating her sister Hasini by 3 points.

The World Quizzing Championships, is an individual Quiz competition, conducted by the International Quizzing Association (IQA), the world’s premier Quiz organization, headquartered in UK.

It is a quiz that is organized around the globe at almost the same time on the first Saturday of June every year and consists of 240 questions, to be answered by the contestants in a maximum allowed time of 120 minutes. The questions are divided over 8 categories of 30 questions each. The eight categories broadly cover areas of History, Media, World, Lifestyle, Entertainment, Culture, Sports, and Sciences.

It was encouraging to note the presence of several young schoolgirls and boys from Sri Lanka at the contest this year, in addition to the seniors who have been regularly taking part in this event, thus confirming the growing enthusiasm for quizzing as a mind sport in the country.

IQA Sri Lanka is pleased that they have been able to provide an opportunity for Sri Lankan quizzers to take part in this prestigious event, continuously during the last 18 years.
