The government is taking steps to establish a Vocational Technology University in the North Central Province by repurposing partially completed buildings in Kaduruwela, Polonnaruwa, originally built for a trilingual school with Indian assistance.
During a site inspection and discussion at the Polonnaruwa District Secretariat, officials agreed to transfer the property to the Ministry of Vocational Education. The meeting, chaired by Deputy Minister of Vocational Education Nalin Hewage, included Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne, Deputy Minister of Water Supply T.B. Sarath, MP Padmasiri Bandara, District Secretary Sudantha Ekanayake, and senior local representatives.
The team reviewed the site’s structural readiness and confirmed its suitability for technical training. This initiative is part of a national plan to establish vocational technology universities across all nine provinces, creating a clear pathway for students to progress from vocational certifications to full degree qualifications, with local provincial students prioritized for admission.
