The Ministry of Education has granted authority to Provincial Education Secretaries and Provincial Directors of Education to determine temporary school closures in response to adverse weather conditions.
The decision comes following ongoing heavy rainfall across several parts of Sri Lanka, which poses potential risks to school activities and student safety.
Under the measure, provincial authorities are empowered to decide whether individual schools in their jurisdictions should stay open or temporarily suspend operations. The ministry noted that decisions should be made after evaluating local conditions, including flood risks, severe weather impacts and road blockages.
This approach allows provincial officials to make localized assessments and act according to safety conditions in each area. (Eduwire)
