German Donors Support Renovation of Schools for the Deaf and Blind in Ratmalana

The Ceylon Schools for the Deaf and Blind (CSDB), founded in 1912 by Miss Mary F. Chapman of the Zenana Missionary Society of the Church of England, continues to play a vital role in educating children with hearing and visual impairments. Today, the institution manages three schools, two in Ratmalana and one in Jaffna, known as the Nuffield School for the Deaf and Blind.

These schools function as government-assisted institutions, with the State providing an approved cadre of teachers. However, all other expenses, including infrastructure maintenance, educational enrichment, hostel facilities, and meals, are funded through the generosity of donors and well-wishers. Education, accommodation, and meals are provided free of charge to every student.

Recently, the two Ratmalana schools benefited from a remarkable donation exceeding Rs. 18 million from Lion Rudolf Shwan, Lion Heinz-Gunther Schumacher, and the Lions Club of Westerwald, Germany. This contribution enabled the much-needed renovation and restoration of several deteriorating buildings, improving the safety and comfort of both students and staff.

The donors were introduced to the school by Dr. Gayani Von Heimendahl, who also took a personal role in supervising the renovation process.

The CSDB has expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Lions movement and the donors from Germany for their invaluable support at this crucial time. Their generosity has significantly strengthened the mission of empowering children with disabilities in Sri Lanka through quality education and care.
