Gateway Colleges Colombo and Kandy excel at Netball


GCC – GCK Teams with the Coaches and the Officials

Gateway College Colombo (GCC) triumphed as the ‘Champions’ at the Inter International Schools’ Under 14 Netball Championship recently. GCC showcased an unbeaten streak throughout the tournament.

Gateway College Kandy (GCK) too was a force to reckon with by being unbeaten in the tournament losing only to their counterpart by 2 points at the all-important semifinal.

The tournament kicked off with Gateway Colombo facing strong competitors in Group C, yet they emerged victorious without much trouble, defeating CIS Colombo 14-0, Lyceum Nugegoda 10-3, and Horizon 9-7. They continued their dominant performance into the quarterfinals and semifinals, overcoming Ilma International 12-0 and then GCK in a closely contested match with a score of 7-5.

GCK also displayed formidable skill, topping their group by defeating the hosts Asian International School 7-2, sweeping past Lyceum Ratnapura 11-0, and edging out Lyceum Wattala 4-3. After their loss to GCC in the semifinals, GCK secured the third place by beating Lyceum Nugegoda 10-7 in the playoff.
The final saw Gateway Colombo face off against Lyceum Wattala, where they clinched the championship with a 10-8 victory. Raneen Nazih, the team captain of GCC, was recognized as the ‘Best Shooter’ of the tournament. Chenuthi Perera received the ‘Best Defensive Player’ award, and Dini Jayaweera was honored as the ‘Netball Queen’.

The team also benefited from outstanding performances by Centre Sairi Sadikeen, Goal Shooter Laiha Reyal, and Wing Defence Adheeba Fareen. Other noteworthy contributions came from junior players Suhasi Jayakody, Roshelli Mendis, Griyada Hapukotuwa, Orla Wijethunga, Shenelly Wanigasinghe, and Kulansa Sasuvi, rounding out a well-balanced and successful team.
