The 20th edition of the World Youth Scrabble Championship (WYSC) brought together 218 of the best young players from across the globe. Standing tall among them were two exceptional students from Gateway College Colombo, Adeesha Dissanayake and Inam Irshad, whose performances brought immense pride to both Sri Lanka and their school.
Adeesha Dissanayake, Gateway’s Consistent Performer
Representing Gateway College Colombo, Adeesha Dissanayake secured an outstanding 4th place overall at WYSC 2025. Competing against the world’s finest youth players, Adeesha once again demonstrated his mastery of the game, his resilience, and his ability to thrive under pressure.
This is the latest highlight in Adeesha’s glittering career: multiple podiums finishes at WYSC, Champion of the Asian Youth Cup 2024, Junior Nationals Champion, National Scrabble Champion, and winner of the Gateway Golden Eagle Award, the school’s highest sporting honor. Adeesha’s journey reflects not only individual excellence but also the culture of discipline and humility that Gateway nurtures in its students.
Inam Irshad, Gateway’s Double World Champion
Another shining star from Gateway College Colombo is Inam Irshad, the youngest of the famous Irshad brothers. At WYSC 2025, he claimed the Under 14 World Champion title, while also finishing 22nd overall, making him the youngest player in the top 25.
What makes Inam’s achievement even more extraordinary is his consistency. In 2024, when Sri Lanka hosted the championship, he became the Under 12 World Champion and the youngest top 25 performer. Winning again in 2025 proves that his brilliance is no fluke but the mark of a true champion.
As a proud Gateway student, Inam’s back to back global victories show how the school’s support and environment help young talents reach their full potential.
Imad Irshad, Another Gateway Talent Also representing Gateway College Colombo, Imad Irshad finished 51st at WYSC 2025. His performance further strengthens the reputation of Gateway as a cradle of Scrabble champions.
