Gateway College students further cemented their position as a dominant force at the Colombo Operated Model United Nations (COMUN) 2026, organised by the Overseas School of Colombo (OSC) and held on February 27th, 28th, and March 1st. The Gateway College delegation demonstrated outstanding excellence, securing by far the highest number of awards across the various committees. COMUN remains one of Sri Lanka’s most renowned and distinguished MUN conferences, attracting hundreds of delegates who come together to engage in rigorous diplomatic debate.

In the Second General Assembly (GA2), which simulated ‘Global Employment Stability & Workforce Displacement’, Navakarthikeyan Satgunaraja achieved 2nd Higher Commendation, while Shaviru Kasthuriarachchi won 1st Higher Commendation. In a closely fought contest, Jehan Gunarathne achieved the prestigious Best Delegate award.

In the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA), which discussed ‘Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) and the risk posed by state and non-state actors’, Mahiru Karunanayake obtained the Best Novice Award. Mohammad Luqmaan achieved 2nd Higher Commendation, while Jathuran Selvendra claimed 1st Higher Commendation. Oshan De Silva won the Best Foreign Policy Statement, and in a stellar performance, Dulain Wanigasekera clinching the highly coveted Best Delegate award.

At the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC), which focused on ‘Global regulatory approaches to emerging food technologies’, Rumika Perera earned 2nd Honorary Mention, while Losara Kulatunge secured 2nd Higher Commendation. Dhanuka Wijegoonaratne achieved the Best Delegate award in a dominant display of technical diplomacy.

In the Federation of Environmental Organisations (FEO), which debated ‘Biodiversity Collapse in Rapidly Developing Economies’, Sanuka Opatha claimed the 1st Honorary Mention award. Hirah Isthiquar achieved both the 1st Higher Commendation and the Research and Proposal Award, while Dylan C. Pangoda clinched the esteemed Best Delegate award.

In the Congress of Vienna (CoV), which focused on ‘The drafting of a charter for the long-term stability of Europe’, Aiden Thomas achieved a double victory, securing the Higher Commendation and the Best Independent Policy Statement.

In the Justice League committee, which simulated the ‘Global Outbreak of Scarecrow’s Fear Gas and Preparation for an Alien Invasion’, the committee was awarded Best Committee under the leadership of chair Yasir Nasran. Shahzadi Sujahudeen achieved a remarkable feat by winning both the Best Individual Policy Statement and the Best Delegate award.

In the International Press Corps (IPC), Charana Thebuwana achieved Best Investigative Journalist. The Best News Agency was awarded to Bloomberg, with Virun Karunaratne part of the delegation achieving success.

In the specialized Crisis segments, Gateway’s strategic prowess was unmatched. In Bloc 1, consisting of CoV, GA2, and CAC, the Delegation of Russia, represented by Dhanuka Wijegooneratne, Aiden Thomas, and Jehan Gunarathne, was awarded Best Delegation. In Bloc 2, consisting of FEO, Justice League, and UNODA, the Delegation of China, composed of Dylan C. Pangoda, Habib Moinuddin, and Mohammad Luqmaan, secured Higher Commendation. The Best Crisis Delegation award for Bloc 2 was clinched by the Delegation of Canada, composed of Shahzadi Sujahudeen, Jathuran Selvendra, and Hirah Isthiquar.

Furthermore, the conference recognized individual leadership, with Anna Pathirage receiving a Commendation for Chairing Excellence. The continued successes of the Gateway College delegation in the MUN circuit would not be possible without the continued efforts of Deputy Principals Mr. Anthony Chelliah and Mrs. Nishotha Anuraj, and the coaching of school alumnus and MUN veteran Mr. Vinura Abeysekera.
