Eight Undergraduate Scholarships in Hungary for 2026

The Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education has announced the availability of eight undergraduate scholarships under the Stipendium Hungaricum programme for the academic year 2026/2027. This initiative offers Sri Lankan students the chance to pursue internationally recognised degrees in Hungary, particularly in the fields of STEM and Agriculture.

The deadline is 15 January 2026 at 14.00 Central European Time.

These scholarships provide valuable access to European higher education and exposure to advanced academic environments. For Sri Lanka, the programme strengthens educational cooperation with Hungary and supports the development of skilled graduates who can contribute to national progress.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Must be a Sri Lankan citizen
• Must be at least 18 years of age by 31 August 2026
• Must have obtained three passes at the 2024 GCE Advanced Level examination in relevant subjects
• Must have a minimum credit pass for English at the GCE Ordinary Level and at least an ordinary pass at the GCE Advanced Level
• Must not be enrolled as an internal undergraduate student in a state university through UGC admission
• All requirements must be fulfilled by 15 January 2025

Benefits offered

Selected candidates will receive a full tuition fee waiver from the host university. Additional benefits include:

  • Selected candidates shall be responsible for the international roundtrip cost.
  • Exemption from the payment of tuition fee
  • Monthly stipend of HUF 43,700 (cca EUR 110) contribution to the living expenses in Hungary, for 12 months a year, until the completion of studies.

Applicants should note that these allowances may not cover all living expenses, especially in larger cities, and additional personal financial support may be necessary.

Fields of study and language requirements

Eligible study areas include subjects within the Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Agriculture streams. Courses are conducted either in English or Hungarian, depending on the chosen programme. Students must meet the language requirements of the host institution.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted through the official Stipendium Hungaricum online portal at apply.stipendiumhungaricum.hu.

Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed by the Ministry in Sri Lanka. Final selections are made by the Hungarian authorities. Any form of canvassing will result in immediate disqualification.

Important notes

Applicants who accept the scholarship but later withdraw will not be considered for future awards under this programme. Extensions of the scholarship period are generally not approved and Terms and conditions are subject to decisions made by the Hungarian government.

Carefully check whether your Advanced Level subjects match the required fields. Strengthen your English proficiency where possible. Research the cost of living in Hungary using the links provided in the official notice. Prepare a strong personal statement that demonstrates motivation, adaptability and academic readiness. Submit the application ahead of time to avoid issues related to time zone differences.
