Curtin University Colombo Leads Global Learning with Immersive Social Entrepreneurship Exchange

Curtin University Colombo recently concluded a landmark Global Mobility Program, hosting 23 students and two staff members from Curtin Perth for a week-long Social Entrepreneurship Exchange that blended academic learning, cultural immersion, and industry engagement.

The program, held from June 23–29, 2025, positioned Curtin Colombo as a leadering lobal, impact driven education by offering participants hands on exposure to Sri Lanka’s rich social innovation landscape.

A Global Classroom Without Walls

Over the course of the week, students stepped beyond traditional classrooms to experience design thinking workshops, micro finance as a development model, and entrepreneurship skills training. Sessions on leadership, negotiation, and emotional intelligence were complemented by networking with established Sri Lankan social entrepreneurs, who shared their journeys of driving change in local communities.

Immersed in Culture and Industry

The exchange offered participants a unique opportunity to engage directly with local enterprises and communities. Visits to Viveca Rattan Furniture and Thusare Talking Hands provided powerful insights into sustainable business models that combine profitability with social impact. Field expeditions to Kithul production societies and tea factories in Sabaragamuwa allowed students to see how traditional industries innovate to balance economic growth with community development.

Cultural experiences, from guided heritage tours to traditional cuisine, enriched the learning journey, helping students connect deeply with Sri Lanka’s vibrant context.

Inspiring Entrepreneurial Mindsets

A standout highlight was the ‘Think Like a Founder’ workshop led by Professor Steve McKenna, which drewover700registrations, with 250 participants selected to explore entrepreneurial strategy, mindset, and leadership. The session received resounding praise and underlined Curtin Colombo’s ability to convene high-calibre learning experiences with global resonance.

Students also collaborated in project development sessions, pitching innovative ideas to expert panels of industry mentors who provided feedback on scalability and social impact potential.

Strengthening Global Connections

Theprogram’sdistinctionwasfurtherhighlightedwhenthedelegationwashostedbytheAustralianHigh Commissioner, reflecting the Australian Government’s support for initiatives that strengthen academic and cultural ties between the two countries.

The exchange not only deepened collaboration between Curtin Colombo and Curtin Perth, but also cemented Curtin Colombo’s growing reputation as a hub for global engagement, innovation, and cross- cultural learning.
