Sri Lanka set to relaunch  World’s Largest Lesson after six years, AIESEC to lead national awareness run ahead of flagship event

Sri Lanka is set to once again take part in the World’s Largest Lesson (WLL), a global education initiative launched by Project Everyone in partnership with UNICEF. This year, the initiative will be spearheaded by AIESEC in Sri Lanka, with the main event scheduled for August 3rd.

The World’s Largest Lesson campaign brings the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into classrooms around the world, encouraging young students to understand and engage with global issues ranging from climate action to quality education. AIESEC, the world’s largest youth-led organization, will be conducting the initiative for the 2nd time locally, drawing on its long-standing work in leadership development, cross-cultural exchange, and social impact.

Press Conference Unveils Plans

At a press conference held on July 4th, members of the initiative’s core committee outlined the scope and objectives of this year’s campaign. The committee detailed its plans to conduct the event in two phases; The Awareness Run  “Miles for Lesson” followed by the single- day event that will reach an estimated 30,000 students across 40 to 50 schools in the districts of Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Kurunegala, Galle, Matara, Ratnapura, Kandy, Matale, Kegalle, and Jaffna nationwide. The initiative will be delivered by a network of over 500 youth volunteers between the ages of 18 and 30, reflecting AIESEC’s youth-led approach to driving social change.

Organizers emphasized that the scale of this year’s event marks a significant step in reintroducing the World’s Largest Lesson to Sri Lankan classrooms, with an emphasis on reaching students across both urban and rural districts.

Awareness Run to Precede Main Event

As part of efforts to build momentum and recruit additional volunteers ahead of the main event, AIESEC in Sri Lanka will hold an Awareness Run – Miles for Lesson on July 25th, starting at Independence Square in Colombo from 7.00 am onwards. The run is designed to raise visibility for the initiative and encourage more young people to join the volunteer network supporting the August 3rd event.

A Youth-Led Push for the SDGs

AIESEC’s involvement underscores its broader global mission of empowering young people to become active contributors to sustainable development. As the world’s largest youth-led organization, AIESEC operates in over 100 countries, offering young people opportunities to build leadership skills through international exchange programs and community-driven social impact projects, all aligned with the United Nations SDG framework.

With the August 4th event, AIESEC in Sri Lanka aims not only to educate thousands of students on global goals but also to inspire a new generation of youth leaders committed to shaping a more sustainable and equitable future.
