Govt to restart stalled university construction projects

The government has approved the completion of halted construction projects at Moratuwa, Peradeniya, Buddhist and Pali, Sabaragamuwa, Kelaniya, and Sri Jayawardenapura universities.

The projects, which were paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent economic crisis, include residential facilities, canteens, and public amenities.

The Cabinet, considering a proposal by Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya in her capacity as Minister of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education, has prioritized the resumption of key facilities in 2025 under standard procurement procedures.

The remaining work will continue from 2026 with revisions based on institutional needs, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Nalinda Jayathissa said.
