Dreams, courage, kindness and a little bit of magic are set to light up the stage as Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella – Youth Edition comes to life at the Lionel Wendt Theatre this January. Presented by Asian International School, Colombo, this enchanting musical promises to transport young audiences into a world where hope shines brighter than hardship and where even the most impossible dreams can come true.

Based on the timeless fairytale loved by generations, this youth edition offers a fresh and vibrant reimagining of Cinderella’s journey reminding children and teenagers that kindness, courage and belief in oneself can truly change destinies.

Cinderella’s tale is more than a happily-ever-after story. It is about resilience, bravery and staying true to yourself even in difficult circumstances. Despite the cruelty of her stepfamily, Cinderella continues to believe in goodness proving that even the simplest dreams can grow into something extraordinary.

Through powerful music, expressive dance and heartfelt drama, the production beautifully blends imagination with meaningful life lessons, making it an ideal experience for young audiences.

Directed by Ms. Anushka Senanayake, with music direction by Ms. Natasha Senanayake and choreography by Ms. Trisha Fernandez, the production showcases the incredible dedication, creativity and teamwork of AIS students. From energetic dance numbers to expressive vocal performances, each student brings Cinderella’s magical world to life with confidence and passion.

Behind every performance lies weeks of practice, commitment and teamwork with students balancing academics and rehearsals while learning discipline, collaboration and self-belief along the way.

“This production is full of magic, humour and heart,” shares Ms. Anushka Senanayake. “It celebrates believing in yourself and dreaming big. Watching our students grow in confidence, creativity and teamwork has been incredibly rewarding.”

The timeless music of Rodgers and Hammerstein adds a special charm to the show. Their legendary compositions, known for creating the golden age of musical theatre, continue to inspire new generations through productions such as Cinderella, The Sound of Music and Oklahoma!.

From lively group numbers to expressive character performances, choreography plays a key role in the magic of Cinderella. Ms. Trisha Fernandez highlights that the real magic comes from the students themselves. “They’ve poured their hearts into every movement, every step and every smile. Their energy, voices and characterisation promise an unforgettable experience for the audience.”

AIS continues its proud tradition of staging a major production every two years, encouraging students to explore creativity beyond the classroom. These productions allow children to develop confidence, communication skills and leadership qualities with many past students even going on to pursue careers in theatre and stage management.
