Cabinet approves recruitment of more than 23,000 teachers

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the recruitment of more than 23,000 teachers to the state service, Cabinet Spokesman Nalinda Jayatissa said.
The minister said the recruitment drive would support the implementation of proposed education reforms. He noted that Cabinet approval was granted in December 2024 to appoint a committee headed by the secretary to the prime minister to identify vacancies in the state service and review recruitment procedures.
Based on requests submitted by ministries, departments and state institutions, the Cabinet has approved the recruitment of a total of 26,095 employees to the public sector. Of this number, 23,344 will be recruited to the Sri Lanka Teachers’ Service.
Cabinet has also approved the recruitment of 705 individuals to the Ministry of Health and Mass Media, 452 to the Ministry of Justice and National Integration, 442 to the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education, and 248 to the Ministry of Ports and Civil Aviation.
