A new approach to manage school transfers

Students from private schools will be eligible to enroll in public schools.

According to a Cabinet plan, a new system that offers admission possibilities in intermediate grades other than Grades 5 and 6 will allow private school pupils to transfer to government schools.

In contrast to the current system, which admits students all year round, the new system will restrict entry to intermediate grades to certain periods of the year, according to Deputy Education Minister Dr. Madura Seneviratne.

According to him, university professors who work at a certain higher education institution will also have the opportunity to get their children accepted into the school that is closest to to their workplace.

The Ministry of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Studies’ Consultative Committee appointed a Cabinet Sub-Committee, whose suggestions served as the foundation for the new system. Students who have a valid reason for moving to a different school for intermediate grades are given preference under the new approach, even if they can still request to be admitted to another school.
