The Gateway College Colombo Media Club recently hosted an inspiring Nature Photography Workshop led by Mr. Chitral Jayatilake, Head of Eco-Tourism at the John Keells Hotels Group and one of Sri Lanka’s most renowned wildlife photographers, conservationists, and eco-tourism pioneers. The workshop, held at Gateway College Colombo, brought together more than 80 students from the Colombo, Kandy, Negombo, and Dehiwala campuses.

Drawing on decades of experience in wildlife photography and conservation, Mr. Jayatilake introduced students to the art and discipline of nature photography. His work, which has been featured by the BBC Natural History Unit and National Geographic, provided an inspiring backdrop as he guided participants through the fundamentals of composition, patience, observation, and the ethics of photographing wildlife. He emphasised that photography is far more than a technical skill it is a powerful medium for storytelling, fostering environmental awareness, and inspiring conservation.

One of the highlights of the workshop was an interactive portfolio review, during which students presented their own photographs and received personalised feedback from Mr. Jayatilake. His thoughtful and practical critiques helped participants refine their technical abilities while encouraging them to develop a more creative and observant approach behind the camera.

The workshop concluded with an engaging question-and-answer session, where students explored topics ranging from wildlife photography techniques and conservation challenges to career opportunities in the field. Discussions also centred on the possibility of organising future field based workshops, allowing students to apply their newly acquired knowledge in natural environments. For Gateway’s aspiring photographers, the workshop was a unique opportunity to learn from one of the country’s foremost experts. Beyond enhancing their photographic skills, the experience deepened their appreciation for Sri Lanka’s rich biodiversity and reinforced the importance of responsible photography and environmental stewardship.
