
Record-Breaking Triumph at the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition 2025
Gateway College has once again reaffirmed its place among the world’s finest centres of young literary talent with an exceptional achievement at the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition 2025. Students across the Gateway network secured an outstanding 71 Gold, 123 Silver, and 99 Bronze Awards, with Nirshraya Gajan further distinguishing the school by being recognised as a Gold Finalist — one of the highest individual honours in the competition.
This extraordinary collective performance showcases not only the creativity and critical thinking skills of Gateway students, but also the school’s unwavering commitment to excellence in English language learning. Year on year, Gateway has infused a culture of confident and expressive writing across its classrooms a culture that is now celebrated at a global level.
From Colombo to Kandy, Negombo to Dehiwala and Ratmalana, our young writers have impressed international judges with their original ideas, compelling storytelling and powerful reflections on issues that shape the world. Their success stands as a resounding testament to the school’s dedication to nurturing thoughtful, articulate and globally minded learners.
The Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition (QCEC), established in 1883, is the world’s oldest international writing competition for school-aged children. Organised by the Royal Commonwealth Society, it inspires thousands of young people across the 56 Commonwealth nations to express their ideas, hopes, and perspectives on global challenges and shared values.
