Outstanding Success for Gateway at the Sri Lanka Indoor Rowing Nationals

Gateway College recorded a stellar performance at the Sri Lanka Indoor Rowing Nationals 2026, held on
the 30th and 31st of January at the DRC, with an event count of 5 Golds, 4 Silvers, and a Bronze, and a
total medal haul of 17 Golds, 10 Silvers, and 1 Bronze across all junior, youth, and mixed categories.
Gateway athletes demonstrated exceptional skill, determination, and teamwork that reaffirmed the
school’s growing prominence in the national rowing scene.


The championship began on a golden note as Jaanya Kumarawadu clinched the top spot in the Under 19
Girls Individual event, setting the tone for what would be a weekend of triumphs. The Under 14 Girls
Relay team—Siyara Rajakaruna, Shehaya Pathirana, Devasha Edirisinghe, and Griyada
Hapukotuwa—followed suit with a dominant Gold-winning performance.


Strong individual contributions continued to bolster Gateway’s medal tally. Treyden Gunasekara and
Siyara Rajakaruna both secured Silver in their respective Under 14 Individual events. Jaanya
Kumarawadu added a Bronze in the Under 23 Girls Individual, while the Under 14 Boys Relay
team—Treyden Gunasekara, Seth Ranathunga, Nethum Mendis, and Senumitha Vithanage—powered
their way to Silver. Ganindu Kirinde also delivered a commendable performance with a fifth-place finish
in the Under 19 Boys Individual category.


Day 2 saw Gateway dominate the relay events, capturing multiple Golds. The Under 19 Mixed Relay
team of Jaanya Kumarawadu, Sehasa De Silva, Nathon Gregory, and Ganindu Kirinde secured Gold, as
did the Under 16 Boys Relay team of Treyden Gunasekara, Chanuth Peiris, Ometh Pathirana, and
Yumeth Godage. The Under 16 Mixed Relay team—Shehaya Pathirana, Siyara Rajakaruna, Ometh
Pathirana, and Yumeth Godage—added another Gold to the tally.


Further success came in the Under 23 Mixed Relay, where Jaanya Kumarawadu, Sehasa De Silva,
Manuga Wijesinghe, and Aaron Wimalasena clinched Silver. The Under 19 Boys Relay team—Ganindu
Kirinde, Nathon Gregory, Manuga Wijesinghe, and Aaron Wimalasena—finished a close fourth, narrowly
missing out on a podium finish.


By securing second place in the overall medal tallies in both the Men’s and Women’s categories,
Gateway College outperformed several leading schools with longstanding rowing traditions. These
results reflect the dedication of Gateway’s athletes, coaches, and the strong support of school
leadership in sustaining a proud tradition of sporting excellence.
