SLIC grants special relief under Suraksha scheme for disaster-affected students

Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation General Ltd. has agreed to provide special concessions under the Suraksha Student Insurance Scheme for school students affected by adverse weather conditions, following a request from the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education.

The concessions apply to claims arising from natural disasters, including floods, landslides and cyclonic conditions, that occurred between Nov. 26 and Dec. 31, 2025. Only claims related to incidents during this period will be considered.

Under the revised arrangements, benefits will be paid to students who lost parents or legal guardians due to disaster-related incidents without applying income limits, subject to documentary confirmation of the loss.

Sri Lanka Insurance also said outpatient benefits of up to 20,000 Sri Lankan rupees will be granted for direct medical treatment, medication purchases and laboratory tests resulting from disaster-related injuries, even if such expenses are not specified in the existing insurance agreement.

In addition, claims for incidents that occurred between Nov. 1 and Nov. 26, 2025, may be considered if the required claim documents were destroyed due to the disaster. In such cases, benefits will be granted based on recommendations from school principals and Grama Niladhari officers.

If bills issued by private hospitals were destroyed, certified duplicate bills issued by the respective institutions must be submitted. If diagnosis cards issued by government hospitals were lost, claimants are required to submit a medical letter issued by the hospital containing patient details, including name, age, diagnosis, and dates of admission and discharge.

For claims affected by disaster conditions between Nov. 1 and Dec. 31, 2025, the existing 90-day submission period has been extended by an additional 60 days, allowing a total of 150 days.
