Srimavo Bandaranaike Student Parliament: Shaping Future Leaders of Sri Lanka

The Srimavo Bandaranaike Student Parliament held its inaugural session on January 28, 2025, at the Presidential Secretariat, marking a significant step in encouraging young students to engage in politics and leadership. The event was graced by Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, who emphasized the importance of nurturing future political leaders from a young age.

Addressing the students, the Prime Minister highlighted that a well-educated and responsible youth is essential for building a strong nation. She encouraged students to develop leadership skills and take an active interest in democratic governance.

The Role of Youth in Politics

The Prime Minister acknowledged that many young people today feel disinterested or even discouraged from joining politics due to negative perceptions. However, she urged them to become part of the change by promoting ethical leadership and good governance. She stressed the importance of civic engagement and active participation in democracy to create a better future for Sri Lanka.

She also introduced the government’s “Clean Sri Lanka” initiative, which aims to improve the country’s governance, education system, and environmental sustainability. This program encourages students and young citizens to take responsibility for their surroundings and contribute to national development.

Leadership & Values in Education

The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Dr. Rizvi Sali, also spoke at the event, emphasizing that discipline and ethical values should be instilled in children from a young age. He pointed out that strong moral foundations help create a harmonious and progressive society.

Meanwhile, Parliament Secretary-General Kushani Rohanadheera reminded students that Sri Lanka holds a historical milestone as the first country to have a female Prime Minister, Srimavo Bandaranaike. She further noted that the current Prime Minister is also a woman, reinforcing that leadership is open to everyone, regardless of gender. She celebrated the increasing representation of women in Parliament as a positive sign for future female leaders.

The Impact of Student Parliaments

Student parliaments like this provide a valuable platform for young people to understand how a democratic system functions. They also help develop public speaking, leadership, and decision-making skills.

During the event, students engaged in a debate on “The Responsibility of Citizens in Building a Better Sri Lanka.” This discussion allowed them to express their views on the role of civic responsibility in national development.

Additionally, the Presidential Secretariat and the Sri Lankan Parliament’s Public Services Division organized this initiative as part of a broader program to encourage student participation in governance.

At the conclusion of the event, certificates of participation were awarded to the students by the Prime Minister and other distinguished guests, recognizing their dedication and commitment to leadership and public service.

The Srimavo Bandaranaike Student Parliament serves as a training ground for the next generation of Sri Lankan leaders. By encouraging critical thinking, civic responsibility, and leadership, this initiative helps shape responsible citizens who will contribute positively to the country’s future.

With programs like these, Sri Lanka is paving the way for a more engaged and proactive youth one that understands the value of democracy and works towards a prosperous nation.
