Diploma in Translation and Interpretation at University of Kelaniya

Applications open from 31 August to 30 September 2025 for this one-year diploma, delivered on Saturdays and designed to produce professional translators and interpreters grounded in both theory and practice. Lectures are primarily conducted in Sinhala and English, with Tamil used as needed.

Rooted in Translation Studies, a key branch of Applied Linguistics, the course applies general linguistics to real-world translation challenges and since 1972, the Department of Linguistics has been active in teaching and research in translation, and its alumni serve in both government and private sectors, reflecting the rising demand for translators and interpreters in Sri Lankan society.

Semester I

  • Introduction to Translation (DTRI 11015)

  • Aspects of Language and Language Skills in First Language (DTRI 11025)

  • Language Skills: Language B (DTRI 11035)

Semester II

  • Interpretation / Simultaneous Translation (DTRI 12045)

  • Practical Translation I (DTRI 12055)

  • Practical Translation II (DTRI 12065)

This programme can equip you with foundational linguistic theory and hands-on translation and interpretation practice, preparing graduates for roles in public administration, media, diplomacy, education, and other sectors where language mediation is essential.
