The University Grants Commission said plans are underway to expand access to higher education by admitting students with disabilities to all state universities, with measures to improve academic and residential facilities.

UGC Chairman Professor Kapila Seneviratne said universities will be equipped with the infrastructure and support systems needed to accommodate students with special needs.

At present, only a limited number of state universities admit students with disabilities. Under the proposed expansion, students will be enrolled across a wider range of disciplines, including Information Technology and Music, he said.

Seneviratne also said the commission is considering upgrades to student accommodation, with Rs. 1.5 billion allocated for the development of residential infrastructure across universities.
