Teacher Recruitment and Career Advancement Criteria in Sri Lanka

The Ministry of Education in Sri Lanka has established clear standards for recruiting teachers and advancing their careers within the Sri Lanka Teachers’ Service.

To be appointed as a permanent teacher, candidates must hold a degree from a university recognized by the University Grants Commission or possess an equivalent qualification. Additionally, they must meet the required pass criteria in both the G.C.E. Ordinary Level (O/L) and Advanced Level (A/L) examinations.

Career progression within the service is guided by several key criteria. These include confirmed permanent service, a minimum number of years in the current grade, satisfactory performance based on official appraisals, passing efficiency bar examinations, and proficiency in official languages as well as link languages such as English, where applicable.

Specialized services, such as the Sri Lanka Teacher Educators’ Service, have additional promotion requirements from Grade III to Grade II. These typically include higher education qualifications (such as a degree or postgraduate diploma in Education), a specified number of service years, salary increments, proven performance, and language proficiency.

For comprehensive details and official guidelines, the “Service Minute of the Sri Lanka Teacher Service” is available on the Ministry of Education website.
