Bronze in the 64th International Mathematical Olympiad for a Sri Lankan Team

A stellar team of six Sri Lankan students represented the nation at the 64th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO 2025), held from July 10 to 22, 2025, at Australia’s Sunshine Coast.

Under the expert leadership of Dr. Chanakya Wijerathne, CEO of the Sri Lanka Mathematics Olympiad Foundation and supported by Dr. Ashwani Amarasinghe of the University of Peradeniya, the team underwent rigorous preparation before stepping onto the global stage.

The standout performance came from Batugahage Don Lasitha Vishwajith Jayasinghe of Royal International School, Kurunegala, who earned a bronze medal after attacking some of the toughest Math problems with impressive skills. Meanwhile, Praveen Charuka Athauda Arachchi from the British School of Colombo received an honourable mention, highlighting his notable contribution to the team’s overall performance.

The full Sri Lankan contingent consisted of :

  • Lasitha Jayasinghe (Royal International School, Kurunegala)

  • Rohan Weerakoon (Badulla Central College)

  • Aditha Herath (Trinity College, Kandy)

  • Janith Dulmina Rajawasala (Ananda College, Colombo)

  • Thenura Dilruk (D.S. Senanayake College, Colombo)

  • Praveen Athauda Arachchi (British School of Colombo)

Dr. Wijerathne emphasized that the IMO transcends medal tallies, stating, “The IMO is not just about winning medals, it’s about fostering problem-solving skills, logical reasoning, and creating a passion for mathematics that will benefit these students in any career they pursue.

Sri Lanka’s success this year not only elevates its standing on the international stage but also inspires a new generation of mathematicians and researchers.

The next IMO will be held in 2026 in Shanghai China. (PW)
