University of Colombo Students Lead Relief Efforts Through “Saviya” After Cyclone Ditwah

The aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah left communities across Sri Lanka shaken, with landscapes altered and thousands displaced. Amid the devastation, a spirit of resilience and hope has emerged, driving efforts to rebuild and support those affected. Recognizing the urgent needs of flood-impacted families, student societies at the University of Colombo launched “Saviya”, a joint relief initiative aimed at providing practical assistance to the hardest-hit communities.

The first stage of the initiative took place on December 1, 2025, at the Student Service Centre. Volunteers concentrated on collecting dry rations and emergency essentials for households that had suddenly lost access to daily necessities. The drive saw a remarkable collaboration between a variety of student groups, including BEEZ, AIESEC Colombo Central, BOTSOC, SAIFA, the Department of Statistics, Rotaract and Leo Clubs, Physics and Astronomical Societies, the Science Society, Gavel Club, UOC Venturers, the Students’ Computer Lounge & Library, and FOS Media. Their combined efforts ensured that donations were sorted efficiently and delivered to flood-affected areas in coordination with the Air Force Camp at Ratmalana.

The second stage, held on December 8, 2025, focused on the nation’s future—the schoolchildren in the affected districts. Essential school supplies were distributed to ensure that their education continued uninterrupted despite the natural disaster.

Through both stages, Saviya highlighted the unwavering commitment of University of Colombo students to stand in solidarity with communities in need, demonstrating the impact of collective action and student leadership in times of crisis.
