Government Announces Rs. 6,000 Monthly Allowance for Schoolchildren

This initiative will benefit approximately 250,000 students whose families are part of the Aswesuma welfare programme. A total of Rs. 6,500 million has been allocated for the scheme, which will launch in January 2025, the Deputy Minister confirmed.

In a groundbreaking move to support education, the government has announced a monthly allowance of Rs. 6,000 for schoolchildren from low-income families starting next month, according to Deputy Minister of Education Madura Seneviratne.

The programme isn’t limited to Aswesuma beneficiaries. Plans are underway to extend financial assistance to orphans and children living in institutional care, ensuring that vulnerable children also receive the resources they need to continue their education.

Grama Sevaka Niladaris have been tasked with conducting detailed surveys to identify students who may require additional support. This ensures that the funds reach the most deserving categories of children, creating a more inclusive education system.

This allowance aims to cover essential educational expenses such as books, stationery, and uniforms, alleviating financial burdens on families. The initiative underscores the government’s commitment to reducing school dropout rates and promoting equal opportunities for all students.

Deputy Minister Seneviratne highlighted the importance of community involvement, urging parents and guardians to ensure their children benefit from the programme.

With education as a top priority, this programme marks a significant step toward empowering young learners and building a stronger, more educated society. Families are encouraged to stay informed about the application process to take full advantage of this initiative.

This move is expected to transform the lives of thousands of children, paving the way for a brighter future for the next generation.
