Tashmila Kavindi is a national-level carrom player from Sri Lanka and she competes internationally and represents Sri Lanka in women’s singles and team events.
At the 2025 Carrom World Cup held in Malé, Maldives, Tashmila produced a major upset by defeating India’s top-ranked women’s player (and defending champion) L. Keerthana. This win shocked many and is being celebrated as a historic moment for Sri Lankan women’s carrom. In that tournament she also beat another top Indian player, V. Mithra (India’s National No.2), reaching the semifinals, an achievement not seen in Sri Lankan women’s carrom for about nine years.
Her breakthrough has been described as a “historic breakthrough after 9 years” for Sri Lanka.
Prior to the World Cup, she also emerged champion in the women’s category at the 2025 National Sports Festival (NSF) Carrom Championship, confirming her status as one of Sri Lanka’s top women carrom players.
Tashmila’s success is more than a personal win, it signals a rise in competitive women’s carrom in Sri Lanka. Her victories against top Indian players (traditionally dominant in carrom) boost national morale and raise hopes for stronger presence of Sri Lanka in future international carrom championships.
Given the long gap since major international success for Sri Lankan women, her breakthrough could inspire more young players (especially women) to take up carrom seriously.
Tashmila’s performance has also sparked applause from Sri Lankan fans and athletes alike, her success is being celebrated as a symbol of rising talent and competitive spirit within Sri Lanka’s sports community. The upset is particularly notable given that L. Keerthana entered the match as the top-ranked competitor, adding extra weight to Tashmila’s victory.
