Demonstrating a long-term dedication to environmental sustainability, and in celebration of World Environment Day 2025, Serendib Flour Mills (SFML) launched a special School Tree Planting Project. The initiative organised on 5 June, aimed to promote environmental stewardship among school children and support youth agricultural education.
The inaugural school tree planting programme was held on 05th June 2025 at the Pitipana Maha Vidyalaya, Homagama. SFML donated fruit plants and essential agricultural tools to the school.
Senior leadership team of SFML joined students and teachers in planting the first series of trees on the school grounds.
The ceremony commenced with welcome remarks from school representatives, followed by an introduction to the company and the project delivered through Panchani Karunasena, from compliance and QA department. The school Principal and plant virus indexing Instructor shared a few comments and elaborated on the significance of the event.

Vijay Sharma, CEO, Serendib Flour Mills, delivered an inspiring speech followed by the official handover of the tools to the school. Students enthusiastically participated in an exciting raffle draw conducted among those present.
A main highlight of the event was the meaningful joint tree planting effort undertaken together with the Serendib team and students. The ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks, marking the beginning of a promising educational partnership.
Additionally, the tree planting initiative directly supports Serendib Flour Mills’ ISO 14064-1 commitment to plant 1,000 trees by 2030, contributing to Sri Lanka’s Forest cover while helping achieve a 25% GHG emission reduction target through natural carbon sequestration. The program also demonstrates the company’s tangible progress toward a carbon neutrality goal in 2035. The School Tree Planting Project echoes the company’s enduring commitment to creating a sustainable legacy and illustrates how Serendib Flour Mills ensures that Nourishing the Nation naturally extends to safeguarding the environment for future generations.
