Scholarships and Financial Aid

Higher education can be expensive. Many families in Sri Lanka worry about how to pay for university or college. But there is good news! There are many scholarships and financial aid options available to help students study in Sri Lanka or abroad.

Let’s take a closer look at how scholarships and financial aid work and how you or your child can benefit.

What is a Scholarship?

A scholarship is money given to a student to help pay for their education. It is usually based on good exam results, talent, leadership skills, or financial need. The best part is you don’t have to pay it back.

There are many types of scholarships:

  • Local scholarships – offered by the government, private universities, or organizations in Sri Lanka.
  • Foreign scholarships – offered by universities and governments in other countries.
  • Private scholarships – offered by companies, banks, and NGOs.

🇱🇰 Local Scholarships in Sri Lanka

University Grants Commission (UGC) Scholarships

The UGC offers Mahapola Scholarships and Bursaries to students selected to state universities.

  • Mahapola Scholarship: Given monthly to selected university students.
  • Bursary: Given to students from low-income families based on financial documents.

These help with basic expenses like food, books, and accommodation.

Private University Scholarships

Private institutions like IIT, SLIIT, Gateway Graduate School, NSBM, CINEC, ESOFT, CA Sri Lanka, UCL and ACBT offer scholarships for high A/L achievers or students with special talents (e.g., sports or leadership).

Always ask the admission office if scholarships are available.

🇮🇳 India

These scholarships often cover tuition fees, living costs, and sometimes airfare.

What is Financial Aid?

Financial aid is support for students who cannot afford full tuition fees. It may come as:

  • A discount or fee reduction
  • A payment plan with small monthly payments
  • A loan that you can pay back after graduating

Some private universities and colleges offer financial aid to help families manage the cost.

How to Apply for Scholarships

  1. Do your research – Check university websites and education agents.
  2. Prepare documents – A/L results, school certificates, recommendation letters, and personal statements.
  3. Apply early – Some scholarships have deadlines 6–12 months before classes start.
  4. Be honest – If applying based on financial need, give correct information and documents.
  5. Get support – Talk to your school or use official platforms like EduWire.lk for guidance.

Education is a big investment, but scholarships and financial aid can make it more affordable for Sri Lankan students. Whether you want to study in Sri Lanka or abroad, there are many options available if you start early, work hard, and apply correctly.
