StudySriLanka: Why Our Island Must Be the Next Global Study Destination

Chathura Kotagama Educationist | Consultant | CxO

For years, Sri Lanka has been known to the world for its breathtaking beaches, lush hill country, and vibrant cultural heritage. But there is another story we must now tell with equal pride Sri Lanka as a global study destination. The time has come for us to champion #StudySriLanka and position our island as the smart, affordable, and high-quality choice for international education.

Our Strength: Transnational Education (TNE)

Sri Lanka is not new to international education. In fact, we are regional leaders in Transnational Education (TNE). We are among the top five destinations globally for UK undergraduate TNE, and at the forefront for UK postgraduate TNE. This is no small achievement it proves that our institutions can deliver academic excellence to international benchmarks.

We may not have adopted Australian TNE as strongly yet, but there is huge untapped potential. Even with TAFE qualifications, Sri Lanka is showing remarkable success. What sets us apart is our ability to maintain higher quality standards compared to many of our neighbours in the region. Our reputation for discipline in academics and regulation gives us a competitive edge.

Why Sri Lanka Makes Sense

  • Multi-ethnic, multi-religious, multicultural: Sri Lanka is home to all, a welcoming society where respect across communities is part of our daily life. For international students, this creates comfort and belonging.
  • Affordability: Cost of living in Sri Lanka is far lower than in Australia, the UK, or the USA. Accommodation, food, and travel are affordable without compromising quality.
  • Pathway to the world: Students who dream of Australia, the UK, or the USA can start here. By pursuing a 2+1 model — studying two years in Sri Lanka and transferring for the final year abroad they not only save costs but also prove their seriousness as students. This is a powerful bridge for those who aspire to migrate for higher studies.
  • Study + Vacation: Imagine studying while surfing in Arugam Bay, or learning business management while living alongside elephants in Udawalawe. Imagine weekend treks in Ella while pursuing an MBA. Sri Lanka is uniquely positioned to create “study vacations” where education is blended with tourism. Short courses, summer schools, and cultural immersions could transform us into a vibrant hub for students from across Asia, the Middle East, and even Europe.

What Must Change

To make #StudySriLanka a true success, policy reforms are urgent:

  1. Part-Time Work Rights
Students must be allowed to work part time. This is not just about financial support; it is about cultural exchange and workforce diversity. The mix of international and local workers can bring new work ethics, best practices, and innovation to our industries.
  2. Simpler Visa Processes
We must create a student-friendly visa system. Quick turnaround times, transparent requirements, and post-study options will make us competitive.
  3. Infrastructure Development
The main campus cities must evolve better student housing, transport networks, digital libraries, and recreation facilities. Education hubs should feel like international student towns, buzzing with diversity and life.
  4. Government & Private Collaboration
Education and tourism must work hand in hand. A coordinated effort between policymakers, universities, and the private sector can unlock opportunities from “study tours” for school leavers to world-class postgraduate research centres.

A Vision Beyond Education

If we succeed, Sri Lanka will not only attract students but also position itself as a regional hub for ideas, innovation, and cultural exchange. International students will leave with Sri Lanka in their hearts, becoming ambassadors for our nation. At the same time, our youth will benefit from exposure to new ways of thinking, new friendships, and global networks.

This is not just about education. It is about building a new Sri Lanka modern, inclusive, globally connected, and economically stronger.

Join the Movement

The call is clear: we have the perfect offering. Now we need the courage to believe in ourselves and act. I invite policymakers, educators, investors, and visionaries to join me in this cause. Together, we can build #StudySriLanka into a brand that resonates across the world.
