Master’s Scholarships in Hungary for Sri Lankan Students

The Government of Hungary, in collaboration with Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education, is offering eight fully funded master’s scholarships under the Stipendium Hungaricum programme for the 2026/27 academic year. This initiative underscores the strong bilateral cooperation between the two nations and opens the door for promising Sri Lankan graduates to immerse themselves in advanced studies in Hungary.

General eligibility requirements:

  • All applicants should be citizens of Sri Lanka.
  • Applicants should be over 18 years old as of 31st August 2026
  • Should possess a 04-year Bachelor’s Degree (SLQF 6) with a First or Second Class Upper in the relevant field of study from a recognized university, by the UGC, Sri Lanka
  • Should possess high proficiency in English
  • Applicants are required to fulfill all the eligibility criteria on or before 15th January 2026.
  • Should be in good health and ready to live in Hungary during the period of study.
  • The government sector employees, should submit their applications through the Head of the institute.

All eligibility criteria must be met by 15 January 2026, by which point applicants should have submitted all required documentation and fulfilled the academic and personal prerequisites.

Fields of Study and Duration

The scholarships are available in disciplines such as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) and Agriculture (Click Here), aligning with the partnering universities in Hungary. The master’s programmes typically run for between one and a half to two years, depending on the course and institution. Students can browse available programmes and host institutions through the official Hungarian online application portal.

Language of Instruction

Most programmes are taught in English and can also be offered in Hungarian, depending on the host institution. Applicants must satisfy the language proficiency required by their selected university, and they apply for the study programmes directly via the Hungarian application system.

Financial Support

Selected scholars will receive generous support, including:

  • Tuition waiver: Full exemption from tuition fees at the Hungarian institution.
  • Monthly stipend: HUF 43,700 (approximately EUR 110) every month, for the full duration of study.
  • Accommodation help: Recipients may stay in a university dormitory for free, or receive a monthly allowance of HUF 40,000 toward rent. Note that in larger Hungarian cities, this contribution may not cover all rental costs.
  • Medical insurance: Coverage under Hungarian social security law, plus a supplementary annual insurance of up to HUF 65,000 per person.

Despite these benefits, the policy clarifies that these supports are partial contributions toward living costs, students may need to supplement them with their own funds.

Important Conditions

Award of the scholarship conditions laid down in this notification may vary as per the criteria imposed by the Hungarian authorities without prior notice.

  • Candidates who received scholarships would select the Higher Educational institutes recognized by the University Grants Commission of Sri Lanka.
  • If any student declines the offer after the selection process, he/she shall not be considered for any of the scholarships in the future.
  • Extension of the period of the scholarship will not be recommended by this Ministry.

How to Apply

  • Applicants should apply through the online application system of Tempus Public Foundation in Hungary by using the web link.
  • The deadline for the application is 15th January 2026, 14.00 (Central European Time)

Selection Process

  • The Hungaricum scholarship awarding authority will forward the eligible list to this Ministry after having the technical checkup.
  • The Eligible candidates will be shortlisted based on their academic merit (GPA) and will be called for an interview by the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education at a short notice.
  • The Nomination will be forwarded to the Hungaricum scholarship awarding authority. No candidate should treat his/her nomination for this Scholarship as the confirmation of the award is a matter entirely within the discretion of the Hungarian awarding authority.
  • Any form of canvassing either written or verbal will be considered as a disqualification for a scholarship.
