Cambridge Strengthens Long-Term Commitment to Sri Lanka’s Education Sector with New Local Presence

Cambridge University Press & Assessment has reaffirmed its long-standing commitment to Sri Lanka’s education sector by establishing a legal entity in the country, marking a major milestone in its regional strategy. This move reinforces Cambridge’s mission to empower students and teachers, enhance learning outcomes, and strengthen partnerships across Sri Lanka’s education ecosystem.

The announcement was made during the event “Cambridge in Sri Lanka: Leading the Future” held on 16 September 2025 in Colombo, attended by Rod Smith, Group Managing Director – International Education; Arun Rajamani, Managing Director – South Asia; and Zahara Ansary, Country Head – Sri Lanka and the Maldives. The presence of Cambridge’s global leadership underscored the growing importance of Sri Lanka within the organisation’s international network.

“This milestone marks Cambridge’s commitment to delivering world-class teaching, learning, and assessment in Sri Lanka,” said Arun Rajamani, Managing Director for South Asia. “We aim to build a robust learning ecosystem that helps students succeed both locally and globally.”

“Sri Lanka has a vibrant and fast-evolving education community,” added Zahara Ansary. “This renewed commitment is a promise to stand alongside schools, educators, and families, ensuring every learner has access to the best global education pathways.”

Empowering Learners Through International Education

Cambridge now supports over 1,000 Cambridge International Schools across South Asia, with Sri Lanka recognised as a key hub for international education. During the event, Rod Smith introduced Cambridge’s latest global study, “Preparing Learners to Thrive in a Changing World”, which surveyed over 3,000 teachers and 3,800 students worldwide. The report highlights the growing importance of digital literacy, communication, and self-management skills to help students navigate an evolving global landscape.

Building Teacher Capacity and Professional Development

Cambridge is taking a proactive approach to strengthen teacher training and classroom excellence through its Professional Development Qualifications (PDQs) and Professional Development Programmes (PDPs). These initiatives focus on inclusive, learner-centred teaching, the effective use of technology and AI, and fostering student well-being and social-emotional skills.

By equipping educators with these competencies, Cambridge aims to nurture a future-ready teaching community capable of inspiring innovation and improving learning outcomes nationwide.

Expanding Access to English Language Skills

Cambridge English continues to play a transformative role in Sri Lanka, with over 40,000 learners sitting for Cambridge English Qualifications (CEQs) annually through 250+ test centres across the country including rural areas. Globally recognised by 25,000+ universities, employers, and governments across 130 countries, CEQs are designed to strengthen students’ skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, building confidence for academic and professional success.

Cambridge’s AI-powered Lingua skill test further enhances access to English assessment, offering institutions a fast, flexible, and reliable way to evaluate language proficiency. The test, aligned with the CEFR framework, is widely used for recruitment, university admissions, and training.

Investing in Local Talent and Future Growth

Recognising the ambitions of Sri Lankan learners and educators, Cambridge has established a dedicated country team to deepen local engagement and deliver solutions tailored to regional needs. The organisation remains focused on holistic development, lifelong learning, and global readiness, while working closely with schools, policymakers, and education partners.

Through innovation, investment, and collaboration, Cambridge University Press & Assessment continues to serve as a trusted education partner in Sri Lanka supporting learners, empowering educators, and helping shape a globally competitive education system.
