Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) Scholarships for Undergraduate Students – 2026

Undergraduate scholarships offered by the Japanese government are now available for the year 2026 under the following scholarship scheme.

Scholarship Overview

For : Undergraduate and National Institute of Technology (KOSEN) programs

For academic year : 2026

Deadline : Extended to 06th June 2025

Administered via : Ministry of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education – Sri Lanka

Medium of Instructions : Japanese Language

Fields of Study : Natural Sciences – A

Science – Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry)

Electrical & Electronic Studies – Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Information Engineering

Mechanical Studies – Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture

Civil Engineering & Architecture – Civil Engineering, Architecture, Environmental Engineering

Chemical Studies – Applied Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Chemistry, Textile Engineering

Other fields – Metallurgical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Maritime Engineering, Biotechnology

Important : Applicants who would like to choose more than one major is required to select maximum three majors from within the course.

General Eligibility Requirements

Nationality : Sri Lankan

Date of Birth : On or after 2nd April 2001

Qualifications : At least 3 passes in G.C.E. A/L 2023(2024) or 2024 (Maths stream: Chemistry, Physics, Combined Mathematics)

Language Skills :

  • Good English knowledge required
  • Basic Japanese is an advantage

Health : Must be in good health

Other : Should not be an internal student at a Sri Lankan state university

Scholarship Benefits

Allowance : 117,000 yen per month + regional bonus

Fees : Exam, tuition, and matriculation paid

Travel : Economy air ticket to/from Japan

Accommodation : Self-funded

Initial expenses : Recommended to bring at least USD 2,000

Non-Eligibility Conditions

  • Military personnel or employees
  • Previous MEXT scholarship recipients
  • Already enrolled in a Japanese institution with “student” visa
  • Plans to study in Japan independently during application period

Application Process

  • One application only (either Undergraduate or College of Technology program)
  • No postal submissions required
  • Deadline : 06th June 2025

Selection Procedure

Written Test (conducted by the Japanese Embassy in Sri Lanka) : Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English, Japanese

Interview : Conducted by Japanese Embassy

Final Decision : Made by Japanese Government

Results Announcement : By end of January 2026
