The Horizon College International (HCI) Sports Excellence Awards 2024 – 2025 was
ceremonially held on 27 th February 2026 at the NIIBS Convention Centre, Kelaniya.
The prestigious event brought together nearly 1,000 participants, including students,
parents, educators, coaches, and distinguished guests, to celebrate the outstanding
sporting accomplishments of HCI’s young athletes.

The ceremony was graced by the Chief Guest, Matthew Abeysinghe, one of South
Asia’s most celebrated swimmers and among Sri Lanka’s most accomplished
sporting icons. Having represented Sri Lanka at multiple international competitions,
including the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games, his presence added immense prestige
to the occasion and inspired students to pursue excellence with discipline, resilience,
and unwavering commitment.

Nearly 250 Horizonites were honoured for outstanding performances across various
sports at inter-school and national levels, in the presence of Chairman Mr. Upul
Daranagama, recognising both individual and team achievements.
Addressing the gathering, Principal Mrs. Maryanne Hills highlighted the importance
of balancing sports with academics, while Mr. Matthew Abeysinghe encouraged
parents to emotionally support young athletes in their sporting journeys.
Beyond recognising victories, the Sports Excellence Awards Day reinforced the
fundamental values that sport instils leadership, teamwork, perseverance, integrity,
and sportsmanship. The event stood as a testament to HCI’s holistic educational
philosophy, which nurtures well-rounded individuals equipped not only for academic
success but also for excellence beyond the classroom.
