Gateway College Colombo Presents Shakespeare with a Sri Lankan Soul

The Drama Club of the Secondary School of Gateway College Colombo proudly brings to the stage Much Ado About Nothing, Shakespeare’s timeless comedy reimagined and beautifully contextualised in the early 20th century Kandy of Sri Lanka. Blending classic Elizabethan wit with a rich local setting, this vibrant production promises a theatrical experience that is both familiar and refreshingly new.

This ambitious Gateway College Colombo production is directed by the teachers in charge of the Drama Club, under the expert guidance of renowned theatre maestro Kalakeerthi Jerome Lakshaman De Silva. With careful attention to language, movement, and cultural nuance, the production breathes new life into Shakespeare’s beloved play while remaining true to its comic heart.

Set in the court of Messina, Much Ado About Nothing is a world where love is a battlefield and wit is the sharpest weapon. At its centre is the legendary “merry war” between the sharp-tongued Beatrice and the confirmed bachelor Benedick an exchange of barbs that proves the line between loathing and longing is razor-thin. Alongside this sparkling romance runs a darker plot: a villainous scheme that threatens the innocent love of Hero and Claudio, reminding us that even the brightest romance can be shadowed by deceit. With bumbling constables, clever trickery, scandal, laughter, and ultimate reconciliation, this production promises a spirited evening of comedy and heart.

The performance runs for two hours, with a 15-minute interval, and will be staged at the Kamatha New Theatre, BMICH.
