A Historic Milestone for Sri Lanka – Australia Relations
The recent visit of Her Excellency the Honourable Sam Mostyn AC, Governor General of Australia, marked a historic moment being the first-ever visit by an Australian Head of State to Sri Lanka. As part of this landmark occasion, I was honoured to be invited by the Australian High Commission to represent the education sector at a high level roundtable focused on the future of skills, education, and opportunity in Sri Lanka.
Held in the presence of industry leaders and policy influencers, the roundtable provided a rare platform to engage in strategic dialogue on how education can drive inclusive growth and long-term resilience.
Championing VET as a Strategic Priority
Representing Australasian Academy, I shared our unwavering commitment to advancing Vocational Education and Training (VET) not as a secondary or fallback option, but as a strategic force for national development.
VET is more than technical training. It is a transformative engine that empowers individuals, strengthens industries, and builds futures. In a rapidly evolving global economy, Sri Lanka must reposition VET at the centre of its education and workforce agenda.
At Australasian Academy, we deliver globally recognised Australian qualifications through our partnerships with:
Our programs focus on aged care, IT, and hospitality sectors that are not only growth drivers but also deeply aligned with Sri Lanka’s social and economic priorities. These industries offer scalable pathways to employment, entrepreneurship, and international mobility, especially for youth and mid career professionals.
A Call to Reframe Education Policy
The roundtable reinforced the urgent need to reframe how vocational education is perceived and positioned. For Sri Lanka to thrive in a competitive global landscape, VET must be integrated into national policy as a strategic enabler not a peripheral track.
This means:
Looking Ahead
I am deeply grateful to have contributed to this milestone dialogue and to have represented Australasian Academy’s mission to deliver purpose-driven, future ready education. As Sri Lanka charts its next chapter, VET must play a central role in shaping a resilient, inclusive, and globally competitive workforce. The visit by Her Excellency was more than ceremonial it was a signal of deepening bilateral ties and shared commitment to human capital development. I look forward to continuing this journey, collaborating across borders and sectors to elevate vocational education to its rightful place in Sri Lanka’s future.
