Sri Lanka to introduce Unique Identity Cards for students

Students in Sri Lanka will be issued unique identity cards under a new National Education Data Management System set to launch as part of the 2026 Education Transformation initiative, the Ministry of Education announced.

The system, aimed at streamlining school administration, will include comprehensive digital records for each student, beginning with those entering Grades 1 and 6 next year. Each student will be assigned a personal data file that contains their birth certificate, exam results, skills, and competencies, alongside the unique identity card.

Minister of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Training, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, said the move will help manage the education system more efficiently by supporting functions such as enrollment, teacher recruitment, and infrastructure planning.

The Sri Lanka Air Force’s Information Technology Division will support the technical development of the system. Officials from the Department of Examinations, Department of Registrar of Persons, and the Sri Lanka Air Force were among those who participated in a key planning meeting held June 2.
