BigSpark by Gateway is set to bring together young innovators, budding scientists and technology enthusiasts for its annual Robotics Competition & STEAM Activity Day 2026, scheduled for Sunday, 18th October 2026, at the BMICH, Colombo.
First launched in 2019, the event has grown into an exciting platform that encourages children to explore the world of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) through hands-on learning, creativity and friendly competition.
Building on the success of previous editions, which have attracted over 500 children from schools across Sri Lanka, this year’s event promises an even more engaging experience, with a special focus on Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Coding and emerging technologies.

One of the major highlights this year will be the opportunity for children to interact with robots presented by SLT-MOBITEL, the event’s Technology and Digital Innovation Partner. These include a dancing robot and a chess-playing robot, offering young participants a fascinating glimpse into how robotics and artificial intelligence are increasingly becoming part of everyday life.
Adding another dimension to the event will be an exciting Virtual Reality (VR) Experience, allowing children to explore immersive digital environments and discover how technology can transform the way we learn, experience and interact with the world.
The Robotics Competition itself will bring together students from national, private and international schools, with young competitors from as early as six years of age participating in junior and senior categories. The competition aims to develop logical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork and innovation while providing children with an opportunity to demonstrate their creativity and technological skills.

Importantly, participation in the Robotics Competition is not a requirement to enjoy the STEAM Activity Day. Children between the ages of 4 and 14 are welcome to take part in the wide range of activities, making the event an enjoyable learning experience for children with different interests and abilities.
Beyond the competition, the STEAM Activity Day will offer a variety of interactive experiences covering Robotics and AI, STEM and Coding, Drama, Dance, Storytelling and Language, and Arts and Crafts. Designed to combine learning with enjoyment, these activities will give children an opportunity to discover new talents, develop confidence and explore subjects beyond the traditional classroom.
The event also seeks to encourage parents and educators to recognise the importance of introducing children to emerging technologies at an early age, not merely as users of technology, but as creative thinkers, innovators and problem-solvers. At the same time, the inclusion of performing arts, language and creative activities reflects the importance of developing well-rounded individuals with a balance of technological, creative and interpersonal skills.

Organised by BigSpark by Gateway, the event is supported by the University of Queensland, Australia, as Principal Partner, and SLT-MOBITEL as Technology and Digital Innovation Partner. These partnerships reflect a shared commitment to inspiring young minds, encouraging innovation and creating opportunities for children to engage with the technologies and skills that will shape their future.
More than just a competition, the Robotics Competition & STEAM Activity Day 2026 promises to be a celebration of curiosity, creativity and innovation, where children can learn by doing, explore new possibilities and, above all, have fun.
