General Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU), Joseph Stalin, stated that a “crisis” has arisen in the country’s education system due to “major deficiencies” in the process of recruiting graduates to fill teacher vacancies in schools.
He made these remarks today, Sunday (18), while speaking to the media regarding the recruitment drive to fill teacher vacancies.
Elaborating further, he stated at the beginning of the year, the Prime Minister and the Education Minister stated that there were 46,000 teacher vacancies in the country’s schools, which was later reduced to 36,000.
He noted that however, these vacancies have remained unfilled for more than a year and a half. “Under these circumstances, although the government announced that it would recruit 23,000 teachers, only about 17,000 applicants have been called for interviews in the initial stage. As the interviews are scheduled to begin in the middle of next month, the likelihood of teacher appointments taking place before January next year remains low,” he added.(Eduwire)
